Electronic driving license in Russia

Electronic driving license in Russia is planned to be introduced in 2020, the technical system is ready for this. This was announced on February 25, 2019 by the head of the traffic police of Russia, Mikhail Chernikov.

It is assumed that electronic documents will help to deal with fake driver’s licenses, as well as help to prevent the use of the same driving license by several drivers.

The traffic police came out with a proposal to switch to the electronic form of a driver’s license last year. We practically already have a digitized base. We have been doing it since 2011. We want this to be enforced next year. Technically, we are ready , –– RIA Novosti quotes Chernikov.

The head of the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate noted that after the introduction of this initiative, drivers will not be able to carry a vehicle registration certificate or a paper version of the document.

Previously, this was true when there were no electronic databases, and the driver’s license was a confirmation that a person has the right to drive a vehicle. And now this confirmation can be realized with the help of information systems, he explained.

At the same time, Chernikov added that all driving licenses will be valid, and the transition to the electronic database will not affect the drivers.

On February 20, Izvestia reported that Russian insurers gained access to the system of inter-agency electronic interaction (SMEV). This will allow issuing the OSAGO insurance with the help of electronic passports of cars.

The transition to electronic passports of cars should be completed on November 1, 2019.
